Current Events
The following headlines made up the current events portion of today’s classes:
- Heavy rains increase concerns over flooding in New Brunswick. The mayor of Fredricton has warned of greater evacuations and urges citizens to be prepared.
- Rain and melting snow have caused mudslides around Quebec City and flooding near Montreal.
- Toronto police have raided the largest Meth lab discovered so far in Canada. IT was in an industrial complex in Mississauga just outside of Toronto.
- Canada has agreed to boost its contribution to the UN World Food Program. The organization says it requires a further $755 million to purchase needed supplies. There haave already been riots in Africa and the Caribbean.
- The US Federal Reserve is expected to lower interest rates a furth .25% down to 2%. This will help stimulate US consumer spending.
- Alberta government is investigating the death of hundreds of ducks after they landed in a settling pond at Syncrude’s operation in Ft. McMurray.
- Prince William made a surprise three hour visit to Afghanistan and landed at Kandahar airfield where he me with British troops.
Period One: History 30
Following current events the class began presentations on Canada’s involvement in World War One. The following topics were presented: Robert Borden and the Conscription Crisis; The Battle of Passchendaele; Valcartier and Preparations for war; Canada’s Hundred Days; and Canadians and the Somme.
The remaining presentations will take place tomorrow.
Period Two: History 20
Following current events yesterday’s jigsaw review quiz on the Causes of World War Two was returned. There was a whole class review of the questions allowing students to make sure they had the correct answers.
The class the worked on an assignment entitled, Steps to War. This reviewed the information in the jigsaw. The majority of the class had completed the assignment by the end of today’s period. No additional time will be given to work on it.
Period Four: History 30
Following current events the class began presentations on Canada’s involvement in World War One. The following topics were presented: Robert Borden and the Conscription Crisis; The Battle of Passchendaele; The Royal Flying Corps and Canadian Aces; and Canadians and the Somme.
The two remaining presentations will take place tomorrow.
Period Five: History 10
Following current events there were notes on the role of elections in political decision-making and granting legitimacy. This was followed by the role and importance of political parties to the decision-making process.
The class then had time t o work on the assignment regarding the causes of reform bills of 1867 and 1884 in Great Britain.
The election simulation will take place tomorrow in room 131. Mr. Sorestad’s ELB 30 class and Mrs. Wurtz’s LTR 30 class will be in attendance.

Current Events
The following stories made up the headlines during the current events portion of today’s classes:
- Austrian Josef Fritzl was arrested for keeping his daughter locked in the cellar and fathering seven kids with her. Three of whom were kept in the windowless locked basement.
- St. John River in New Brunswick is nearing flood levels, some residents are being advised to prepare for evacuation.
- Three tornadoes ravaged parts of Virginia leaving a wake of destruction behind them and 200 people were injured.
- General Motors announced the layoffs of 1000 people at its Oshawa truck assembly plant and 2500 workers at three US plants.
- George Bush will address the US public talking about current housing crisis; rising energy prices and student loans.
- Governor of North Carolina Mike Easley has announced his support for Hilary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primaries.
- There was a spectacular crash during the Le Mans auto race in Italy. The driver survived the destructive crash with only a broken ankle.
Period One: History 30
Following the viewing and discussion of current events the class watched a video and answered questions on World War One: Canada’s Role
The class ended by starting notes on the Breaking of Old Ties; Canada’s movement away from Britain at the end of World War One.
Period Two: History 20
Class started with the writing of the Causes of World War Two jigsaw quiz.
Following current events the class watched the BBC program The Failure of Appeasement followed by a whole class discussion of the major points of the video.
Period Three: History 20/Band
The class was given time to complete the jigsaw activity on the early conflicts of the Cold War.
At the end of the period notes on The Cold War in Asia wee started.
There will be a jigsaw review quiz on Thursday.
Period Four: History 30
Following the viewing and discussion of current events the class watched a video and answered questions on World War One: Canada’s Role
The class ended by starting notes on the Breaking of Old Ties; Canada’s movement away from Britain at the end of World War One.
Period Five: History 10
Following current events the class got their last in-class time to complete the preparations for the election simulation on Thursday.
Six students were absent.

Current Events
The following stories were the top headlines in todays current events portion of class:
- A passenger train crash killed at least 66 and injured as many as 400 in China.
- U.S. truck drivers head to Washington to protest high fuel prices, amid calls for a price cap.
- Oil hits $120 per barrel, gas prices are expected to hit $1.40 per litre.
- Striking Toronto Transit workers were legislated back to work today by Ontario government.
- California firefighters battle blazes around the Sierre Madre after thousands evacuated.
- The people of the Kashechewan Reserve in northern Ontario were evacuated because of rising flood waters. Chief Jonathon Soloman said a safer reserve location could be an alternative.
- British researchers announced successful trial of gene therapy to treat people suffering from hereditary blindness. Four of six regained some vision causing new hopes for further treatment.
- Mars Inc. will buy William Wriggley for $23 billion in cash. Wriggley will become a subsidiary of Mars. Inc.

Following current events this class worked in the LRC to complete their presentations on Canada’s Involvement in World War One.
Class presentations will begin on Wednesday.
Period Two: History 20
Following current events the class completed the viewing of Prelude to War. The video questions were then taken up.
The jigsaw review quiz for the Causes of World War Two will take place tomorrow.
Period Four: History 30
Following current events the class worked in the LRC to complete their presentations on Canada’s involvement in World War Two.
Presentations will begin on Wednesday.
Period Five: History 10
Following current events the class was in the LRC to work on their election presentations.
The presentations will begin on Thursday.

The following were the top headlines during the current events portion of the class:
- Canadian Brenda Martin was found guilty of internet fraud and sentenced to 5 years in prison, Canadian officials are working to get her transfered to Canada.
- Hilary Clinton won the Pennsylvania primary closing the gap with Obama. North Carolina and Indiana are next.
- The UN warns of a growing global food crisis due to high prices and dwindling supplies. It is the worst food crisis since WWII.
- Children of Texas Polygamy sect have been sent into foster care.
- A London gallery will display photographs by Linda McCartney as the tenth anniversary of her death from breast cancer.
- 90 people impacted by ATM bank card scam costing 10’s of thousands. Banks have lost $106 million to this type of fraud this year.
Period One: History 30
Following the discussion of the current events the class was given time to complete the first page of Canada in World War One jigsaw. After which they were divided into expert groups for discussion, and then into sharing groups. There will be time to complete the jigsaw tomorrow after which they can go to the LRC to work on their group presentation assignment.
Prior to the conclusion of class the presentation groups were allowed to pick their topics. I had earlier created the groups which are non-negotiable. the groups and topics are as follows.

Period Two: History 20
Following current events time was given to complete the first page of the jigsaw on the causes of the Second World War. The class then met in expert groups and were finally divided into mixed groups to share their answers and complete the activity. Reminder that there will be a jigsaw quiz on Monday.
Period Three: History 20/Band
The class took up the questions related to the Cold War alliance map and assignment. Following the in class discussion the students were given time to work on and complete the Cold War Chronology questions based on the handout of significant events from the Cold War. The class was assigned the first page of a jigsaw on the Cold War Confrontation. The first page is to be completed for home work for Friday’s class.
Period Four: History 30
This class achieved much the same as the Period 1 class. At the end of the class the groups for the World War One Presentation assignment chose their topics. The groups and topics follow:

On Thursday, April 24th, Max, Aurora, and Jenna will write their unit Two exams.
Period Five: History 10
Following current events the class was divided into political parties based on their responses to a questionnaire. The four political parties then went to the LRC to research their issues that will be presented on Wednesday of next week in room 131.
Period five will meet directly in the LRC tomorrow.

Current Events
The following news stories were highlighted as we watched the morning news:
- There were riots following Montreal’s game seven victory over Boston in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
- Brenda Martin’s verdict is expected today in Mexico on internet fraud charges.
- Hilary Clinton is looking to win Pennsylvania primary to pull ahead of Obama.
- There is an emerging Canadian connection in Texas polygamy case.
- Protests in Jakarta curtailed the Olympic torch relay taking place there.
Period One: History 30
The class wrote the unit two exam today. The following students were absent: Alex Carswell, Jorie Halcro, Jade Heron, Megan Kellington, Melissa Rogers, Catlyn Ross.
Period Two: History 20
The class filled out the Secondary Activity Profile and heard the student awards that are available. Many people completed the profile and returned it in the time alloted. Those who didn’t complete the profile it is due this Friday, April 25.
The class then watched current events which were discussed. The topics presented can be found above.
Background to Japanese Imperialism as a cause of World War Two was introduced and notes taken on the topic. A jigsaw looking at the causes of World War Two was then handed out and students began to work on it. It was impressed upon them to complete the first two questions so that the page could be easily completed at the start of tomorrow’s class.
Those people that were absent for Monday’s exam wrote the make up test today.
Period Four: History 30
The class wrote the unit two exam today. The following students were absent:Max Nygaard, Aurora O’Flanagan, Jenna Marshall
Period Five: History 10
The class took notes on the ideas of Classical Liberalism concerning its key ideas and basis in the economic thoughts of capitalism, and history. The class then completed a questionnaire to identify their political orientation and were assigned a reading package to prepare them for tomorrow’s class when they will be organized into political parties to complete an election simulation.

- Former US President Jimmy Carter met with Hamas and Syria, saying both are ready to accept Israel.
- Pope returned to Rome following six day trip to US, met by expected new mayor
- Astin Martin crashes into lake on the way to set of the new James Bond movie

Class completed current events and the comprehensive review ahead of tomorrow’s exam.
Period Five: History 10
Class watched and discussed the days current events.
Notes were taken on Classical 19th Century Conservatism and the influence of Edmund Burke. The central ideas of conservatism were presented as was the champion of conservatism on the continent of Europe Clemens von Metternich.
Time was given to complete the Cause and Effect Chart of the Reform Bill of 1832, see April 17th. The chart is to be completed for Tuesday’s class when it will either be handed in or taken up.

History 30: Periods One and Four
Remember your unit test is on Tuesday. Makes sure that you are working to prepare. I will answer questions before starting the comprehensive review in tomorrow’s class. There will also be a current events test this Friday.
History 20: Period Two
Your unit two test is tomorrow morning. Good studying and best of luck.
History 20: Period Three
If you do not hand in your dialectic essay on World War Two tomorrow. You will be entered in study hall for Tuesday as well as the mark penalty.
History 10 Period Five
We will be continuing to look at the growth of democracy in Britain. The underlying causes of the Great Reform Bill of 1832 and its importance to later developments. We will also look at the operations of parliament including the role of the speaker, loyal opposition, and the prime minister.

Current Events
The following news stories were the top headlines for the current events portion of class
Period One: History 30
The class completed Laurier and Reciprocity and looked at the reasons for Laurier’s loss of the 1911 election and Laurier’s successes and contributions to Canada as well as his failures while Prime Minister.
The class took notes on the start of World War Two; how Canada became involved in the conflict; the response of English and French Canadians to war; and how the Canadian government gave itself new powers in the War Measures Act to regulate and organize Canada’s war effort. The act was never repealed by the government.
The class completed the notes and then moved on to start a jigsaw that looks at Canada’s involvement in World War One.
The Settling the West poster advertisement was due at the start of class. Those not done can expect study hall on Tuesday.
Reminder- The Unit Two Exam is on Tuesday, April 22, and on Monday the Comprehensive Review will take place.
Period Two: History 20
The comprehensive oral review of Unit Two that was started yesterday was completed. The Unit Two exam will be on Monday, April 21. Remember to take the time to complete the unit review including the items and key questions. This will help get you ready for the exam.

The class completed the notes from Wednesday on significant political developments in Britain to 1800.
A Cause and Effect Organizer covering the Great Reform Bill of 1832 and its causes was handed out. To accompany this chart students were also given four student information sheets covering the needed materials to complete the chart.
Unit Two Industrial Revolution Exams were handed back and taken up to complete the day.

Period One: History 30
We started Unit Three: The Search for Canadian Sovereignty. The three paths of nationalism; continentalism; and imperialism were introduced as basic outlines for Canada’s relationship with the rest of the world.
Three questions about the policies of Sir Wilfrid Laurier in the first decade of the 20th century were assigned and the answers taken up before the end of class, Ferguson pages 266-268, 269.
- Explain Laurier’s rejection of closer imperial ties with Britain and the British Empire.
- Summarize Laurier’s response to Britain’s request for aid during the Boer War 1899-1902. How was his response viewed by English and French Canadians?
- Illustrate the opposing viewpoints surrounding Laurier’s decision to created the Royal Canadian Navy in 1910. Why did Laurier chose this path?
A handout on the issue of reciprocity and Laurier’s election defeat was also given out and some members of the class had completed it by the time the bell sounded. There will be ten minutes to complete this assignment at the start of tomorrow’s class.
The Unit Two exam will be written on Tuesday, April 22nd, after the comprehensive unit review is completed on Monday.

Period Two: History 20
The class completed viewing Chaos and Consent. The listening guide was reviewed in whole group discussion. The comprehensive unit review was started and will be completed on Thursday, April 17th because of this the unit exam was moved to Monday.
Period Three: History 20/Band
The class worked on an Alliances of the Cold War map assignment. The majority of those not absent for the music festival had completed this assignment by the end of the period. The class also received the Cold War Chronology handout and the accompanying questions. A couple of class members had started this assignment by the end of the period.
Reminder The dialectical essay on World War Two as a good war is due on Thursday. hand them in to the office or to me.

Period Five: History 10
Class completed the 19th Century Political Spectrum assignment reviewing the groups of the French Revolution and placing them on the political spectrum. This was taken up as a class. The period ended with notes on Important Political Events in British History to 1800. The notes will be completed on Thursday.
