History Classes 29 April 2008

Current Events

The following stories made up the headlines during the current events portion of today’s classes:

• Austrian Josef Fritzl was arrested for keeping his daughter locked in the cellar and fathering seven kids with her. Three of whom were kept in the windowless locked basement.
• St. John River in New Brunswick is nearing flood levels, some residents are being advised to prepare for evacuation.
• Three tornadoes ravaged parts of Virginia leaving a wake of destruction behind them and 200 people were injured.
• General Motors announced the layoffs of 1000 people at its Oshawa truck assembly plant and 2500 workers at three US plants.
• George Bush will address the US public talking about current housing crisis; rising energy prices and student loans.
• Governor of North Carolina Mike Easley has announced his support for Hilary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primaries.
• There was a spectacular crash during the Le Mans auto race in Italy. The driver survived the destructive crash with only a broken ankle.

Period One: History 30

Following the viewing and discussion of current events the class watched a video and answered questions on World War One: Canada’s Role

The class ended by starting notes on the Breaking of Old Ties; Canada’s movement away from Britain at the end of World War One.

Period Two: History 20

Class started with the writing of the Causes of World War Two jigsaw quiz.

Following current events the class watched the BBC program The Failure of Appeasement followed by a whole class discussion of the major points of the video.

Period Three: History 20/Band

The class was given time to complete the jigsaw activity on the early conflicts of the Cold War.

At the end of the period notes on The Cold War in Asia wee started.

There will be a jigsaw review quiz on Thursday.

Period Four: History 30

Following the viewing and discussion of current events the class watched a video and answered questions on World War One: Canada’s Role

The class ended by starting notes on the Breaking of Old Ties; Canada’s movement away from Britain at the end of World War One.

Period Five: History 10

Following current events the class got their last in-class time to complete the preparations for the election simulation on Thursday.

Six students were absent.

Current Events

The following stories were the top headlines in todays current events portion of class:

• A passenger train crash killed at least 66 and injured as many as 400 in China.
• U.S. truck drivers head to Washington to protest high fuel prices, amid calls for a price cap.
• Oil hits $120 per barrel, gas prices are expected to hit $1.40 per litre.
• Striking Toronto Transit workers were legislated back to work today by Ontario government.
• California firefighters battle blazes around the Sierre Madre after thousands evacuated.
• The people of the Kashechewan Reserve in northern Ontario were evacuated because of rising flood waters. Chief Jonathon Soloman said a safer reserve location could be an alternative.
• British researchers announced successful trial of gene therapy to treat people suffering from hereditary blindness. Four of six regained some vision causing new hopes for further treatment.
• Mars Inc. will buy William Wriggley for $23 billion in cash. Wriggley will become a subsidiary of Mars. Inc.

Period One: History 30

Following current events this class worked in the LRC to complete their presentations on Canada’s Involvement in World War One.

Class presentations will begin on Wednesday.

Period Two: History 20

Following current events the class completed the viewing of Prelude to War. The video questions were then taken up.

The jigsaw review quiz for the Causes of World War Two will take place tomorrow.

Period Four: History 30

Following current events the class worked in the LRC to complete their presentations on Canada’s involvement in World War Two.

Presentations will begin on Wednesday.

Period Five: History 10

Following current events the class was in the LRC to work on their election presentations.

The presentations will begin on Thursday.
