Current Events

The following headlines made up the current events:

  • Brenda Martin returned to Canada for the first time in two years after being transfered from a Mexican prison to a Canadian jail in Kingston. She will now be eligible for parole under that Canadian parole system.
  • Stephen Harper will visit the flooded areas of New Brunswick. He is expected to offer financial aid to the communities affected. 500 people have been forced from their homes by rising waters.
  • A Vancouver woman made a video tape talking of her impending murder by her husband. Five weeks later she was murdered by her husband who also killed their child.
  • The election results from Zimbabwe were released. The opposition leader Tsvzngarai received 48% of presidential votes two short of avoiding a run-off with Robert Mugabe.
  • Local elections in Britain saw Labour lose to the Conservative opposition. Labour’s loss is blamed on rising fuel and food prices leading some to consider alternatives to Gordon Brown’s leadership.
  • An intestinal virus in China has led to 2000 children falling ill, 700 have been hospitalized and 21 have died. Some victims have permanent brain damage and other longterm problems.
