Current Events
The following stories made up the morning headlines in the current events portion of the class:
- Burma hit by a cyclone over the weekend. As many as 10,000 killed. 100,000 people have been left homeless. International agencies say massive international aid will be required.
- A B.C. judge will begin an inquest into Tasers following the concerns over their use after the death of a Polish man at the Vancouver airport last fall. The man’s mother has called for a ban on their use.
- Clinton and Obama continue campaigning ahead of primaries in North Carolina and Indiana. Clinton promises to renegotiate trade agreements with China and NAFTA with Canada and Mexico if elected President.
- Families on the northern Manitoba reserve of Norway House Cree Nation will receive funding from the Canadian government to look after 37 handicapped children until an agreement between the Federal and Manitoba governments can be reached over longterm funding. The government also wants to see if there are any others affected.
- Condoleeza Rice, U.S. Secretaty of State, completed a three day trip to the Mid East ahead of Bush’s expected visit. She met with Israeli Prime Minister Olmert. President Bush hopes to reach a peace agreement before he leaves office.
- A German cruise ship headed to Latvia has grounded on a sandbar. Coast guard vessels will try to free the stranded ship by off loading its fuel and using tugboats. The ship has 2,000 passengers and crew.
- Prince Harry received his campaign medal for his service in Afghanistan’s Helmand province. The Prince’s six month deployment ended after two months when the press leaked the news causing him to be withdrawn.

Period Two: History 20
Following current events the class returned to work on their World War One portfolio assignment in room 105. The portfolio will be due on Monday, May12, 2008.
Period Three: History 20/Band
The class began watching the movie Dr. Strangelove. The movie will be finished during Wednesday’s class. The next current events portfolio installment is due this Friday, May 9, 2008.
Period Four: History 30
Following the current events portion of the class the students worked on an internet based assignment looking at the Canadian Women’s Movement following World War One; see Period One above for assignment details.
The postwar Labour Movement Handout was turned in.
Period Five: History 10
Following current events the class took notes introducing the Congress of Vienna. When completed the notes the student began work on answering the first page of a jigsaw activity looking at the conservative response to the French Revolution.
