Current Events

The following stories made up the headlines of today’s current events portion of each class:

  • Barak Obama convincingly won the North Carolina primary, while Hilary Clinton won an narrow majority in Indiana. Clinton has started to talk about party unity in November leading some to speculate she will soon leave the race.
  • A deadly fire that killed three in a North Vancouver apartment building appears to be suspicious according to the RCMP. The heat and flames were som intense that some jumped from balconies to escape.
  • Fists fights have begun in Burma as people struggle to get enough food and water to survive. Officially 22,000 are dead and 41,000 missing nearly a million people are homeless and polluted water and dead animals and humans are leading to concerns about disease.
  • Demitri Medvedev was installed as the new President of Russia. Vladamir Putin will be sworn in as Prime Minister on Thursday leading Russia’s largest political party.
  • Some environmentalists are concerned over toxic chemicals that were found in large snow piles in Montreal. The concern is over possible leeching into the ground water during melting. City officials say not to worry, as the sewer will take the chemicals to treatment plants where they will be removed.

Period One: History 30

The class worked on page one of the jigsaw looking at Canada from 1926 through the Great Depression. We finished the day with notes looking at the changes to Canadian society during the 1920s.

There were many students missing from class because they were writing the AP Calculus test. Those missing should come and see me for their jigsaw handouts.

Assignments were picked by John and Simone.

Period Two: History 20

Following current events the class headed to room 105 to work on the WWII portfolio assignment. The portfolio assignment will be due on Monday, May 12, 2008.

Period Three: History 20/Band

The class completed the viewing of Dr. Strangleove. The movie questions were then discussed leaving two questions to discuss on Friday because of the end of the class.

Period Four: History 30

Following the current events portion of the class time was given to work on the first page of the From Boom to Bust jigsaw assignment. The class then copied the notes regarding changes to Canadian society in the 1920s.

Aurora absent.

Period Five: History 10

Following the current events portion of the class the class returned to their jigsaw sharing groups to complete the activity. Two of the four groups had completed the jigsaw with 30 minutes remaining in the class.

Those students then began working on a chart looking at the various nationalist responses to the Congress of Vienna settlement.

There will be a review quiz of the jigsaw at the start of tomorrow’s class.
