Current Events

The following stories made up the current events portion of today’s class:

  • International aid has begun to arrive in Burma, the first UN aid plane landed yesterday. Aid distribution is being hampered by the ruling military junta who will not grant visas to many of the aid workers. Aid agencies refuse to simply hand over food, but wish to see that it is properly distributed. Frustration and anger among the people is growing.

  • Zimbabwe’s election commission has delayed the run off presidential election as violence in the country increases. Pro-government militias have displaced 30,000 people from their farms and wounded people are streaming into hospitals. The international community is pushing for observers to watch the election to make sure it is fair.
  • A Surrey B.C. couple injured in an Eqyptian bus crash on the last day of their honeymoon will return to Canada soon. The women had part of an arm amputated and suffered severe burns. The husband was burned in the crash caused by excessive speed and a tire blow out.
  • A Texas sink hole has grown to the size of seven football fields. It has consumed houses, tractors, oil equipment telephone poles and is more than 30 metres deep.
