Current Events

The current events portion of today’s classes was taken up Current Events tests in periods one, two, four and five.

The History 20/Band class Current Events portfolio was due today.

Period One: History 30

Following the current events test the class had 15 minutes to complete their Boom to Bust jigasaw. There will be a jigsaw quiz on the material covered on Monday.

The class then watched a video World War Two: Canada’s Role and completed a viewing guide accompanying the video.

At the end of the class the next assignment on Canada in World War Two was handed out.

World War Two Small Group Assignment

You will study a particular aspect of World War Two. For this assignment you can work in pairs or groups of three. You are required to sign up with me for one of the following topics.

Topics

1. Fascism in Canada

2. Canadian-American relations (Hyde Park and Ogdensburg)

3. Women and the home front

4. The Dieppe Raid 1942

5. Canadian prisoners held by the Japanese

6. Canadians on D-Day

7. Canadian involvement in the Italian Campaign

8. Royal Canadian Air Force and the air war in Europe

9. Canadian Women and the war

10. Royal Canadian Navy and the Battle of the Atlantic

You will gather the necessary information and present it to the class. Your presentation can take the form of a power point presentation, a conventional presentation, or a news cast.

Your researches should lead to the creation of 1) a time line chronicling significant events dealing with you r topic; 2) a listing and description of important figures (minimum 3), and 3) its significance to Canadian involvement in the Second World War. 4) How it changed Canada’s relationship with the Allies or the world. 5) Your group must also provide a handout for the class with the important dates and figures summarized for their use and benefit.

Period Two: History 20

Following the current events test the class return to room 105 for the last day on their World War Two portfolios. The portfolios are due on Monday.

Period Three: History 20/Band

The next installment of the Current Events portfolio was due at the start of today’s class. The following people handed them in: Charity R., Chelsey R., Andi T..

We completed discussing the questions that accompanied Dr. Stranglove. Following the Dr. Strangelove discussion, the class watched Mr. Kennedy - Mr. Khrushchev from the BBC accompanied by a discussion afterward. The period was ended with notes on the Kennedy-Khrushchev notes and questions.

Berlin; Tension Builds and the Cuban Missile Crisis, Global Forces pp. 192-195

  1. Explain the problem created by Berlin for East Germany. How did Khrushchev first try to force the West out?
  2. Define the diplomatic term détente. Why did Khrushchev back away from earlier attempts at détente?
  3. Explain the three possible American responses discussed by leaders following the discovery of missiles in Cuba in October of 1962.
  4. Summarize the lessons of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the closest the world has ever come to nuclear war, for: the United States; the Soviet Union; and the United Nations.

Class review handouts for the upcoming test were given out. The test will be on the second class following the return from band tour.

Period Four: History 30

Following the current events test the class had 15 minutes to complete the jigsaw, From Boom to Bust. There will be a jigsaw quiz on Monday.

The class then watched a video World War Two: Canada’s Role and completed a viewing guide accompanying the video.

The class was handed out the small group presentation assignment on Canada in World War Two (see Period One above).

Period Five: History 10

Following the current events test the class had time to complete yesterday’s questions on the Second French Republic and Empire.

When done the questions the students began, and the majority nearly completed the Territorial Evolution of Europe map assignment.

Class was dismissed early to facilitate the handing out of report cards.
