Current Events

The following stories made up the headlines for today’s current events:

  • An earthquake in China injured at least 10,000 people. As many as 3,000 to 5,000 were killed including hundreds of students as schools collapsed. The earthquake measured 7.8 on the Richter scale and was felt as far away as Pakistan.
  • The UN will nolonger send food and other aid materials to Burma because the military is hoarding the aid supplies and not sending it to the people effected. The first US aid flight arrived in Rangoon.
  • President Bush says that the US will work hard to help communities devastated by weekend storms in Oklahoma where 6 people were injured and in Missouri where 15 died and Georgia where one person was killed.
  • The owner and founder of Taser International will testify before a B.C. hearing into the safety of the devices. This is all due to the death of a Polish man who died as a result of being Tasered by the RCMP.
  • The Canadian oil and gas company Encana announced that it will split into two different companies by 2009: one concentrating on oil production and the other focused on natural gas, as a result shares went up nearly $5.00.
  • Calgary based WestJet has announced that they will be adding a fuel surcharge of up to $45 per ticket to offset the rising cost of fuel. This follows an earlier move by Air Canada to include a surcharge of up to $80 per ticket.

Period One: History 30

The class started with the review quiz of the From Boom to Bust jigsaw. After the quiz the class watched and discussed the news. Following the discussion of the news we headed to the computer lab to work on a World War Two presentation assignment. Student groups are responsible for creating class presentations on the following topics:

1. Fascism in Canada

2. Canadian-American relations (Hyde Park and Ogdensburg)

3. A industrial country: women and the development of the home front

4. The Dieppe Raid 1942

5. Canadian prisoners held by the Japanese

6. Canadians on D-Day

7. Canadian involvement in the Italian Campaign

8. Royal Canadian Air Force and the air war in Europe

9. Canadian Women and the war

10. Royal Canadian Navy and the Battle of the Atlantic

You will gather the necessary information and present it to the class. Your presentation can take the form of a power point presentation, a conventional presentation, or a news cast.

Your researches should lead to the creation of 1) a time line chronicling significant events dealing with you r topic; 2) a listing and description of important figures (minimum 3), and 3) its significance to Canadian involvement in the Second World War. 4) How it changed Canada’s relationship with the Allies or the world. 5) Your group must also provide a handout for the class with the important dates and figures summarized for their use and benefit.

Period Two: History 20

Following current events the class began viewing Saving Private Ryan. There is an accompanying question sheet to guide student viewing of the film.

Period Four: History 30

The class started with the review quiz of the From Boom to Bust jigsaw. After the quiz the class watched and discussed the news. Following the discussion of the news we headed to the computer lab to work on a World War Two presentation assignment. Period Five: History 10

Following current events the class began by taking up the questions on the Second Republic and Empire in France. Following that discussion there were notes looking at the 1848 Revolutions and notes accompanied by questions on the Crimean War of 1856.

“The Crimean War (1856)”, A Century of Change, pp. 138-139.

1. Explain the motives of Russia for starting the Crimean War. Why did the British and French become involved?

2. Evaluate the role played by Austria in the conflict. How did this effect Austro-Russian relations?

3. Describe the results of the War for: Russia; Britain; France; and the Ottoman Empire.
