Current Events
The following stories made up the current events portion of today’s classes:
- Deadly helicopter crash in Cranbrook B.C. killed four people including one person on the ground. Investigator are still looking into the cause of the crash. The person killed on the ground was a pedestrian who was in Canada from Kenya, on a student visa. The rest were all from the Cranbrook area.
- China has revised the death estimates for the earthquake down to 15,000. However, the damage to roads and infrastructure are causing problems for rescuers. The Chinese government says it has 100,000 people involved in search and rescue operations. According to authorities in communities close to the epicentre villages are gone and in one community 7,000 out of 10,000 were killed.
- Aid continues to arrive very slowly in Burma. The actions of the ruling military are greaty hampering aid efforts. As people struggle to survive, weather forecasters are saying that storms in the Indian Ocean could form Cyclones that may hit Burma. This would be a hard blow for the 2 million people in need in the country.
- Hilary Clinton says she will fight on after winning the West Virginia primary with 60% of voter support. Clinton says super delegates should not write her off before the Democratic Convention. Clinton and Obama will now focus on Mississippi as the next primary.
- Brigadier Dennis Thompson has taken over from Guy Laroche as Canadian commander in Kandahar Afghanistan. Thompson hopes to be albe to focus on reconstruction during his time as Canadian force commander.
- According to the American Insurance Institute the Smart Car is the safest vehicle in its class. The car was awarded number 1 rating from front and side impacts and a number 2 for restraint systems. The vehicle’s stability and traction control systems also aided its high rating.
Period One: History 30
Following current events the class went down to room 105 for our second last day for Canada’s role in World War Two presentations.
Period Two: History 20
Following current events the class continued viewing Saving Private Ryan. There will be 10 minutes needed from tomorrow’s class to finish the viewing which will be followed by a discussion of the viewing guide.
Period Four: History 30
Following current events the class returned to the computer lab for our second last day for Canada’s role in World War Two presentations.
Period Five: History 10
Following current events the class continued working on the Unification of Italy. The first side of yesterday’s assignment sheet is due and was checked in class. The class was then given time to complete a chart of the relevant leaders connected to Italian unification. Following that an interview assignment was given out and students drew their role as either interviewer or interviewee from hat. The evaluation criteria checklist was handed out and time given to create questions and research possible answers.
