Tuesday – 15 February 2011

Current Events

Due to VCR problems Monday and the February break next week current events will resume on February 28th.

History 20

The class began with the World War One PowerPoint focusing on the affairs of 1916 and the introduction of the first of the new weapons of war, poison gas. This was followed by time to complete and hand in “The War on Other Fronts” assignment looking at the war’s impact beyond Europe.

History 30

The class began by taking up the Royal Government assignment. This was followed by notes on “The Fur Wars” and questions on “The Return of the Iroquois. ” The questions were taken up at the end of the day.

History 10

The class began by completing the notes on the “Legacy of the Enlightenment.” The class then had time to work on and complete “Chapter 2:Introduction, Edict of Nantes  and Summary.” Yesterday’s assignment on “Justice System and Salon Society” was handed in. The people who were absent for Monday’s quiz wrote it today.

Current Events

There were no current events today, as CTV was not available on the cable at school.

History 20

Today’s class began by looking at World War One outside of Europe. This was followed by taking up the guided reading assignment Chapter 2: Mobilization to War Technology. The “European Geography” assignment was also handed back. A list of people who’s assignments have not been completed is available on Maplewood.

History 30 All Year

The class had time to complete sharing “Canada in World War One”jigsaw. The class will write the jigsaw review quiz on Wednesday.

The class began with notes on the “French and English Struggle for the New World. This was followed by time to complete the map of European Empires and a review of the wars between France and Britain for control of Canada.

History 10

The class began with the quiz on the Enlightenment jigsaw. This was followed by time to work on the guided reading assignment “Justice Systems and Salon Society.” The class ended with notes on “The Legacy of the Enlightenment.”

Current Events

The current events portion of today’s classes was made up of the first current events test of the semester.

History 20

The class began with the current events test. The class then had the World War One PowerPoint. Period One ended with time to complete the Chapter 2: Mobilization to War Technology guided reading assignment.

History 30

The class began with a current events test, This was followed by a video on “Empire Builders” in North America. The questions connected to the video were taken up before the end of the period.

History 10

Following the current events test the class had time to complete the sharing portion of the Enlightenment jigsaw. There will be a quiz on the entire assignment on Monday.

Current Events

The following headlines made up today’s news:

  1. A deadly B.C. plane crashed killed the pilot and passenger when it clipped wings with another plane and crashed in a river. Weather not a factor.
  2. Super Bowl ticket scandal affects two Canadians, Darrel and Britney Tansoni who hoped to have a special weekend.
  3. Javier Bardem star of “Beautiful” has been nominated for an Oscar based on his role in the film.
  4. It is nearly one year after the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. CTV plans an Olympic recap with Brian Williams of TSN.
  5. Quebec Premier Jean Charest is in Quebec City to announce provincial support for a new arena in the city. The province and city will split the cost of the $400 million project.
  6. Quebec police are investigating a school bus-van crash that killed four people in a van transporting workers home from the night shift at a poultry plant.
  7. The Quebec National Assembly has banned the Sikh ceremonial dagger, the kirpan, from members of the legislature.
  8. A massive explosion in Allentown, PA. saw eight homes destryoed and 6 people missing. The explosion is believed to have been caused by a natural gas leak. The blast was felt 10 km away.
  9. Activision is stopping production of the popular video games Guitar Hero, D.J. Hero and True Crime amid declining sales.

The class began by viewing and discussing the day’s news. The news was followed by time to work onthe Chapter Two Guided reading : Mobilization and War. This was followed by a PPT on World War One.

History 30 All Year

The class began the jigsaw on Canadian Involvement in the First World War. The class moved as far as meeting in sharing groups. There will be time to complete the activity on Monday.

The class began by viewing and discussing the day’s news. This was followed by notes on “Royal Government.” Following the notes time was given to complete the Royal Government Chart and Feudalism Canadien Style.

History 10

The class began by viewing the current events. Following the discussion the class completed the quiz on the first page of the Enlightenment jigsaw. This was followed by time in Expert groups to share, compare and created the best answers. Class ended with students in sharing groups. There will be time to complete the activity after tomorrow’s current events test.

Current Events

The following headlines were the topics of today’s news:

  1. Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi is being indicted for paying for sex with a 17 year old prostitute and using the powers of his office to cover it up.
  2. TSX and London Stock Exchange have announced plans to merge. The deal is worth $6 billion and will create the largest stock exchange in the world with the largest number of mining and energy stocks.
  3. Canadian get used to living with winter, some even go camping in the cold winter weather.
  4. One in Five Canadians suffers from some form of mental illness. Despite this the discussion of mental illness is still a taboo subject for many. Clara Hughes, Michael Landsberg and Maragret Trudeau are all speaking out to raise public awareness.
  5. The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to release its report into the crash of a helicopter off the coast of NewFoundland. The report will focus on the gearbox and the claim that it will run for 30 minutes without lubrication.
  6. In Egypt protesters continue to block Tahrir square and some have staged protests outside the countries parliament. Protesters say that they won’t move until President Mubarak resigns and leaves the country.
  7. 400 Super Bowl fans have been offered compensation packages from the NFL as their seats to the game were closed due to fire regulations. Initially they were offered $2,400; but now can choose between transferable tickets to next years game and the money, or non-transferable tickets to any future Super Bowl including airfare and hotel.

Today’s classes began by viewing and discussing the day’s news. Following the news the class took up the viewing guide from yesterday’s video. This was followed by an assignment on international “Conflict and Cooperation.”

The class began by watching and discussing the day’s news. Following the news the class handed in the “Three Big C’s” assignment. This was followed by notes on Champlain and the Religious Orders. This was followed by time to begin and work on the “Royal Government” assignment.

History 10

The class began with the day’s current events. This was followed by an explanation of the jigsaw activity that the class would begin today. This was followed by time to complete the first page of the Enlightenment jigsaw. Tomorrow’s class will begin with a brief quiz on each person. The guided reading “Introduction, Lifestyle, and Summary” is also to be handed in tomorrow.

Current Events

The following stories made up the current events portion of today’s classes:

  1. Calgary medical researchers have developed new technology that may remove the use of needles in blood tests replacing them with a microchip.
  2. Emma Forest has written a book about her struggle with mental illness. Paints an intimate portrait of the relationship between patient and doctor.
  3. David Cassidy, a 1970s heart throb and star of the “Partridge Family,” is the subject of a new book called “I think I Love You.”
  4. Two Montreal men are being charged with voluntary homicide in the death of Jordan Morrison in the Dominican Republic.
  5. The search for missing twins is expanded to Switzerland, the body of the father was discovered last week in Italy with no sign of the girls.
  6. Quebec government lawyers have gone on strike demanding a 40% pay increase. They will continue to appear at bail hearings and complete jury trials already in progress.
  7. Egyptian protesters continue to occupy Cairo’s main square saying they will remain until President Mubarak is out of office. The army has begun to make attempts to restore normal traffic flow through the square.
  8. A Chechen rebel leader has claimed responsibility for a deadly airport bombing in Moscow that killed 36 and injured 200. The bomber was a man from the North Caucasus.
  9. The Fraser Institute has given the polygamist school in Bountiful British Columbia a perfect score of 10. In spite of declining enrollment and low graduation rates.

The class began with viewing and discussing the day’s news. This was followed by reviewing “Plans for War.” This was followed by a video called “The World Goes To War” reviewing the lead up to the First World War.

The class began by concluding the video on Canada’s role in World War One. This was followed by beginning the Canada in World War One jigsaw.

The class began by writing the First Contact jigsaw quiz. This was followed by viewing and discussing the day’s news. The class then had adequate time to complete the “Three Big C’s” about the early exploration of Canada.

The class began by viewing and discussing the day’s current events. The news was followed by a review of the important topics covered so far. The class ended with time to work on the Chapter 1: Introduction, Lifestyle and Summary guided reading assignment.

Current Events

The following headlines made up the news in today’s classes:

  1. Canadian Jordan Morrison was killed outside a Dominican night club. Two Canadians are being held along with three others. Police expect to charge two in relation to the death.
  2. A study raises questions about access to the HPV vaccine as a new study reveals that it protects boys from some forms of cancer. The vaccine is free for girls.
  3. Two girls abducted by their Canadian father in Switzerland have police concerned as the father’s body is believed to have been found under a train. Police are searching for the girls.
  4. Michael Rafferty will appear in court today for a pretrial hearing. He is charged in the death of Tori Stafford a grade three girl abducted and murdered in 2009.
  5. Cairo protesters say they will not leave the square in central Cairo until Mubarak is out. The protests are dying out as schools and banks reopen today.
  6. The Maritimes were hit by a winter storm over the weekend knocking out power to hundreds of homes. The region is expecting more snow tomorrow, as concerns arise about where to put it all.
  7. A Weather Network video shows the possible danger from snow on top of vehicles being knocked off on over passes and creating poor visibility for other motorists.

The class began by watching and discussing the day’s current events. This was followed by notes on “Prewar Crises.” Following the notes the class was given time to finish up a couple of assignments from last week.

The class began by viewing and discussing the day’s news. Following the news, the class completed the European exploration PPT. This was followed by the “Three Big C’s” assignment. The class will write the First Nations jigsaw quiz tomorrow.

The class began by viewing and discussing the day’s news. This was followed by our review of the Scientific Revolution. This was followed by notes on the “Enlightenment.” The class ended with students beginning the Chapter 1: Introduction, Lifestyles and Summary assignment.

Current Events

The following headlines made up today’s current events:

  1. Tensions rise in Cairo, as pro-Mubarak demonstrators try to approach anti-government protesters in the central square. Protesters call for a “Day of Departure.”
  2. Transport Canada has announced new regulations for airport security and passenger. The aim is to streamline airport security and removing the frivolous things that drive people crazy.
  3. Harper is in Washington for meetings with Obama. The main topic of conversation will be border security. There is talk of coordinating Canadian regulations with American practices. Could be the biggest change since free trade in 1988.
  4. There is a bail hearing for Sayfildin Tahir Shariff. He is wanted in the US for links to a terror group that killed five U.S. soldiers in Iraq in 2009.
  5. Dale and Linda McDouglas, two Canadians, were swept out to sea by a strong wave off the coast of Mexico. It is believed that they are drowned.
  6. Canada’s unemployment rate has climbed to 7.8%. This is despite the creation of 69,000 jobs. The increased is based on more people seeking jobs.
  7. Quebec municipal politicians and construction executives are being charged with fraud, embezzlement and extortion. The 28 charges stem from municipal building contracts that saw the trading of inside information for cash and contributions.
  8. Cyclone Yasi hit Australia with winds of 280 km/h. At least one person was killed and thousands of military personnel have been deployed to help with the clean up.

The class was shortened because of the Wes Cates, Shomari Williams presentation this morning. The class began by watching the news and discussing the top stories. The news was followed by time to work on the “European Alliances” assignment. The assignment is due Monday.

History 30 All Year

The class was shortened due to the Rider presentation this morning. The class began by discussing “Laurier: Years of Compromise.” This was followed by  beginning a video on Canada’s Role in World War One.

The class began by watching and discussing the day’s news. This was followed by 20 minutes to complete the First Nations jigsaw assignment. There will be a quiz on the jigsaw on Tuesday, February 8th. The class then began a PowerPoint on “European Exploration.”

The following stories made up the current events portion of today’s classes:

  1. Super Bowl is only a week away. The hype surrounding the advertising is beginning to heat up.
  2. Julian Assange recently appeared on 60 Minutes and is defending his actions as freedom of the press.
  3. Protests in Egypt continue against the rule of President Hosni Mubarak who is refusing to step down.
  4. Parliament is set to resume today amid speculations of a spring time election, as Canadians focus their concerns on the economy.
  5. A key Islamist political leader has returned to Tunisia following the fall of the country’s autocratic President last week.
  6. Cyclone Anthony has hit Australia. It is the last of a long series of disasters to hit the country.
  7. Japanese citizens are fleeing an erupting volcano. It is the first time it has erupted in 52 years.
  8. An Indonesian Popstar has been senteced to three and a half years in jail following home made porn tapes on the internet.
  9. John Barry, a Hollywood composer, is dead at age 77. He is best known for the themes of the James Bond movies but received Oscars for his work on Dances with Wolves and other films.
  10. A fire at a Montreal apartment complex saw firefighters rescue paintings worth millions of dollars.

The classes began by reviewing the class outline and expectations for students. The class then had time to work on an assignment looking at the geography of Europe. The class ended with notes on the 19th Century Origins of World War One.

History 30 Non

The class began with notes on Canadian Sovereignty. This was followed by a chart outlining the issues confronting Prime Minister Laurier at the beginning of the twentieth century. The front of the page should be done for Wednesday’s class.

The class began by reviewing the class outline and student expectations. This was followed by notes on the Six Geographic Regions of Canada. The last few minutes were used to begin the map of Canada assignment.

The class began by reviewing the class outline and student expectations. This was followed by the viewing and discussion of the day’s news. Following the news the class looked at Medieval Society and the challenges facing it. The class ended with time to work on the European Map assignment.

Current Events

The following headlines made up the current events portion of today’s classes:

  1. Winter storm blankets Ontario through NewFoundland. Thousands stranded at airports and long line ups for trains and other services. The storm has also paralyzed things in the US Midwest through the North East.
  2. The streets of Cairo and Alexandria saw clashes between anti-government protesters and pro-Mubarak supporters. There were several injuries, as the military remained neutral calling on people to return to their homes.
  3. Justin Bieber was in Toronto for the screening of his documentary called “”ever Say Never characterizing his rise to fame.
  4. Prime Minister Harper has expressed his concerns on a recent CRTC ruling on internet usage on Twitter. The ruling opens the way for ISPs to charge based on usage not a flat fee for service.
  5. Stacy Bonds is sewing the Ottawa Police for $1 million alleging that her charter rights were violated by a police strip search.
  6. The television show “Dallas” will return to the air this year, as Turner Network Television will air a new shows on the children of the original Ewing dynasty.

The class began by watching and discussing the day’s news. This was followed by the first reading and responding assignment: Chapter 1: Introduction; Nation-states; and Summary. The selection was read by the entire class and time was then given to complete the questions.

History 30 All Year

The class began with a quiz on Laurier’s Years of Compromise. This was followed by notes on Foreign Policy. The class then looked at the Klondike Gold Rush finishing the period.

The class began by viewing and discussing the day’s current events. This was followed by notes on First Peoples, First Contact. Following the notes, the class had time to complete the first page of the First Nations jigsaw. This was followed by ten minutes in expert groups. Tomorrow’s class will begin with a quiz on the first page.

The class began by viewing and discussing the news. Following the news the class had time to work on the European map assignment. The class concluded by reading Machiavelli’s Lessons on States Craft. The class concluded by answering for questions on reading, the majority of whom were finished by the end of the period.
